Cat’s Induction to the world of IY – Sami

CatToday I met with one of my fellow YCR’ers; Cat. She joined myself and CJ in the office on her first day as a volunteer for Inspired Youth. We have another one!!

Before she joined, CJ asked her to think about 3 things that she could bring to the company, as well as 3 things she was hoping to learn whilst with us. This is what she decided.

JRCF Film Shoot Day 1 – Sami

JRCF2 I am incredibly lucky working with Inspired Youth, Kev and CJ work and meet some of the most amazing people, and with those people come heartfelt and inspiring stories.

We all have a story to tell, some of us just have more to tell, Some of the stories could have more twist and turns than even the bestselling author could ever dream about let alone write about, but these stories, these people we meet, they’re real.

These stories they tell are their life experiences, and granted some aren’t overly positive, but these people when you listen to what they have to say are absolutely amazing.

I had never heard about the Jack Raine Community Foundation up until the project with them was revealed, and after going there and meeting the staff, and those the charity helps, I felt awful. How is it that something so amazing and beneficial to the Young people in York is barely known about?

Young People and Social Policy lecture – 14th January – Adele

Image

P1020715vSo.. Me and Lauren went up to the York Uni to present our You Tell Me campaign, and smashed it once again!! 🙂 We got amazing feedback, not only straight after the event but via the Young People and Social Policy blog. It really does boost our confidence up, certainly the comments via the blog!! And we are more than happy to answer questions! We hope that we get our message across about our experiences of being young mums. This campaign does mean alot to us, as we are giving all young mums a voice. It is still hard for us to watch the film, and present it.. Most of the time we still get emotional!! But seeing the impact it makes, shows us that it really is worth it. I’ve said before, but no matter how many times we do these events, each one is different and we are still very nervous about it. But afterwards, especially hearing and seeing positive feedback, we wonder what we were nervous about. Without CJ or Kev, we wouldn’t have been able to do this so we are both grateful!! Hopefully, we will have many more events to smash!! 🙂

IT’S CHRISTMAAAAAASSSSSS!!

This year has been a mad rollercoaster.. And not just with IY 😉 In total I have volunteered for 57 hours (I wonder myself how I’ve put up with CJ and Kev!!) I have done many different things, first day I did become a white van man 🙂 I have also taken part in a few conferences, one being the huge No Wrong Door conference!! Reading back at the things I wanted to bring and what I wanted to learn, makes me realise how far I have actually come. I have learnt lots of things to be honest, mainly how to do complicated things on the computer!! I’m really looking forward to 2013.. Hopefully there should be many opportunities for me as a result of me being an IY ambassador.

IY First Impressions-Anne

Image

CRI PlaqueMy name is Anne and I am a third year student at The University of York. I have just started my placement today here at Inspired Youth. The first thing i have picked up is the down to earth attitude from chris and his calming spirit eased me into my first day. I found Kevin down to earth too and is very matter of fact with his opinions. He is a very busy man so much so he has two screens on his desk. I have done research today and have looked at the feature projects on the website. They are all  good and, matter of fact surrounding the issues that are being addressed. One thing that has stuck out to me today is the film i watched on recovery stories. I found it extremely raw and powerful. It captured the true nature of these peoples lives and it was acted out by these very people. By far one of the most interesting afternoons i have had in a long time and very much looking forward to my next day here.

Visiting the 360 space at York Uni :) – Adele

So today me and the dude’s from IY went on a little road trip up to York Uni to check out the 360 space!! I didn’t really know what to expect and even though Kev and CJ were trying to explain it, I just didn’t get it! So off we went into the Ron Cooke Hub, down the red carpet 😉 and into the 360 space. It was alot smaller than I expected and wierder than I thought it would be – the ‘walls’ were soft and when you touched it you could move the whole ‘wall’!! We waited a good 10 minutes before the IY film 🙂 And there it was… It is chuffing clever but it baffled my little brain with how much stuff goes on and having to turn all the time to look at all the walls….. But what an excellent idea the 360 space is!!! So after that we went on another road trip to the Orillo office and One&Other office to meet those dudes for the first time… (Well they’ve seen my face on the young mum film!) We managed to persuade them to use their (huge) office as the venue for the Freerunner film 🙂 Think I’ve had a productive day today (was even baking with my son at 8:30 this morning!) Just a shame my time at IY is coming to an end soon 😦

Audio Production – Liam

Image

In the background this month Liam has been working away preparing audio rushes for the CRI Seeds of Recovery edits. As Liam co-recorded the audio statements and directed the Lyrical content of the campaign he was very well placed to do the first line edit on the stories and statements. The rushes were then handed over to Kev to use in the edit. You can see the results here. Impressive!

IY Advisory Board Meeting – Sami

The day started with Aidan and Max (members of Brightsparks) coming to a preliminary meeting with CJ, Kev, Liam and I. Where CJ gave us a a sheet of paper asking us about IY.

The aim was to have us ready for the Advisory Board meeting, prepared with notes and ideas that we each had in reference to Inspired Youth.

The aim was also to prepare us to meet members of Inspired Youth’s advisory board, who were coming down to meet with us.

How To Be A Good Manager Part I – Sami

On Wednesday 31st October, I attended the first part of a 2 day workshop on How To Be A Good Manager. Which took place at the Catalyst building of York University.

I love working with Inspired Youth because they’re always sending me to different conferences and training days where I come away learning so much. Today was no different.

I’m not going to lie, I was nervous, I mean not about being a manager, the whole point of my university course is to train me to be a qualified Youth Work Manager. But there is something nerve wracking about going into a room, full of strangers, who are all dressed in suits.
